Elementary is located in northwest Amarillo, and is in its 15th year of
operation. This campus serves approximately 420 students in
kindergarten through fourth grade. We serve a diverse student
population, and our goal is to provide a safe, positive learning environment
that promotes student success in academics, while cultivating the life-long
skills necessary to be productive citizens.
Woodlands has been an Exemplary Campus based on the
State of Texas Academic Excellence Indicator System for all its years
of existence. Woodlands has received the 2005 No Child Left Behind
Blue Ribbon School honor, and the 2008, 2010, 2011 TBEC Honor Roll School
award. Our staff sets high expectations for all students in all areas so that
students not only meet, but exceed our state expectations.
To provide a strong reading foundation, Woodlands
provides a balanced literacy environment that stresses reading for meaning,
phonics and writing. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing through fourth
grade, our teachers are trained in literacy practices that integrate reading
and writing. The Accelerated Reading Program is used as a supplemental
tool to promote independent reading.
Kindergarten through fourth grade teachers use a
variety of strategies to increase the levels of learning in Math.
There is a focus on problem solving, critical thinking and an overall
understanding of number sense which help prepare our students for higher
education. Students are able to work on their mental math skills through the
web-based program, First in Math.
Technology is a major emphasis at Woodlands. Our school
is networked and each classroom has four student stations and a Smart Board
where students are able to learn interactively. We also have a computer lab
and several carts of wireless laptops that can be used throughout the school.
We understand the importance of technology in our society and strive to improve
students’ technology skills.
Woodlands has a well-equipped science lab that provides
many exciting opportunities for students. This lab is used for science
experiments which offers them opportunities to be actively involved in learning
about science concepts.
Woodlands implements Differentiated Instruction. This
approach stresses the importance of meeting each student at their readiness
level and challenging them to grow as much as possible. Through this
approach we are able to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom in a
variety of ways rather than expecting all students to learn the same matter the
same way. We are very excited about being on front lines for
Differentiated Instruction in our district, and continue to see the benefits it
has for our students.
Parent and community involvement at Woodlands is very
high, and this enables our school to achieve success in many areas. Our PTA and
VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools), are an integral part of our school, and I
encourage you to find your place to be involved.
Through the collaborative efforts of our parents and staff,
the students at Woodlands are continuing to raise the bar of academic
